What is it?

A fracture is a break in a bone. Most fractures are due to a single application of significant force to a normal bone.

Fractures can be:

  • Open: the overlying skin is disrupted and the broken bone is in communication with the environment through a cutaneous wound.
  • Closed: the overlying skin is intact.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms are:

  • Severe pain
  • Deformity: The limb looks out of place.
  • Swelling, bruising or pain around the wound
  • Problems moving the limb

In addition to a complete medical history (including asking how the injury occurred) and physical examination, tests to diagnose a fracture may include the following:

  • X-ray.
  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • computed tomography (Also called a CT or CAT scan.)
