Alopecia is a condition that causes abnormal hair loss. It can affect the scalp and other parts of the body where there is hair: eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits, beards, among others.

In general, there are two types of alopecia, scarring that causes the destruction of the hair follicle and, therefore, are considered irreversible, and non-scarring, which can be reversed.
Among the types of non-scarring alopecia, the most common is androgenic, which causes 95% of baldness cases. For its part, among the scarring alopecias the most common is the areata.
Among the causes of alopecia, two factors stand out: genetics and hormonal changes. However, autoimmune diseases also play a very important role, since the immune system can mistakenly detect follicles as external agents and attack them until they are miniaturized, atrophied, and destroyed.
There are many conventional treatments for alopecia. However, once the follicle is destroyed, the only treatment is hair transplantation, which requires available hair for transplantation, as well as being expensive, besides, not all people are transplant candidates.
Treatment with mesenchymal stem cells has proven to be successful against the harmful effects of alopecia areata while the viable follicle is still present, since they have an immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect, which reduces the damage caused by the immune system, combats cytokines and chemokines that characterize alopecia areata.
