Stem cell therapy side effects: what to expect

The effects patients may notice, how long they last and what is monitored before, during and after your application.

Stem cell therapy side effects: what to expect

Short answer

The most common effect after an application of mesenchymal stem cells is a mild, passing fever. Some people feel tired or have a headache for a day. A 2026 systematic review of 42 randomised trials with umbilical cord cells given intravenously found a favourable safety profile, with fever as the only more frequent effect.

In 30 seconds

  • Mild fever is the most reported effect and usually passes quickly.
  • Tiredness, headache or soreness at the IV site are mild and temporary.
  • You are monitored before, during and after the application.

What do studies say about safety?

Mesenchymal stem cells have been studied for years in thousands of patients. An updated 2026 review of 42 randomised trials with umbilical cord cells given intravenously, with more than 2,000 patients, found no safety signals other than a higher rate of fever. An earlier review of 55 trials reached the same conclusion.
